Every year, the winter solstice gives us a chance to take a well-deserved break and turn inward to reflect. Like a bear hibernating in its den, we can use this time for a bit of self-reflection.
A First Breakthrough for the Ashukan Institute
For the team at the Ashukan Institute, the winter solstice also marks the end of a cycle as we celebrate the completion of our first year of operations. Looking back, it is clear that, when it comes to Indigenous issues and current events, the past few months have been full of opportunities to engage in dialogue with one another and build bridges.
What topics this year have made you think the most or inspired you to learn more about the realities faced by Indigenous peoples?
Here are our top 5 topics and/or events that have created opportunities for dialogue:
- The Pope's visit to Canada and the apology to First Nations regarding residential schools
- https://ici.radio-canada.ca/espaces-autochtones/1942738/sterilisations-autochtones-rapport-quebec-gouvernement-sante-histoire
- The findings of the report on the forced sterilization of Indigenous women
- The unprecedented artistic boom and the success of many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit artists
- The lack of attention to Indigenous issues in Quebec’s election campaign
- Two rulings by the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal finding systemic discrimination against Indigenous people (one regarding insurance, the other regarding police funding)
